CLARKSDALE — Director Letha Richards and Fitness Trainer David Jones, of Coahoma Community College’s Fit for Life Healthy Campus Initiative, walked the walk literally over the weekend placing second and first respectively in their divisions during the Spring Initiative’s 2nd Annual Jump, Hop and Spring 5k.

C:\fakepath\Letha:David2.jpg“The healthy changes that we have made while participating in the Fit for Life program on campus definitely influenced our results today,” said Richards, who also serves as CCC’s Director of Educational Outreach. “The changes in diet, the training in the fitness center and all the miles we walk daily (on the fitness track between 3-4 p.m.) are paying off.

Jones placed first in division and fourth overall, while Richards placed second win her division.

According to Richards, the next race will be the annual 5k during the Juke Joint Festival.

Made possible with a grant provided by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, CCC’s Fit for Life initiative was constructed to foster a campus culture of health and wellness while simultaneously enhancing the quality of life for students and employees through promotional health activities.

The main portion of the grant supported the construction of a half-mile walking trail (completed) featuring six exercise stations on CCC's campus. The program is designed to motivate students, faculty and staff to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Continuing through April 29, the program gives the CCC community use of state of the art gym equipment in CCC’s Fitness and Wellness Center located in the Frank Gambrell Student Affairs Multi-Complex. It also provides access to a personal trainer and the opportunity to participate in a myriad of free exercise classes.
