With the holiday season fast approaching, Coahoma Community College will host its annual “Sounds of the Season: A Festival of Choirs” on Monday, December 9, 2019, at Oakhurst Baptist Church, located at 828 W. 2nd Street in Clarksdale. The event is free and open to the public and will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.

The event, now in its sixteenth year, will feature the sounds of Coahoma’s renowned Concert Choir and will showcase the Jim Hill High (Jackson, Miss.) and Overton High School (Memphis, Tenn.) choirs.

According to Kelvin Towers, music department chair and director of choral activities, each year, CCC selects two premier high school choirs to showcase to the Coahoma County area. He says that attendees can expect a festive winter celebration that combines the forces of choral, pop, and gospel music traditions.

“I'm excited about the high energy pieces and student soloists that will be featured this year that will create a great memorable experience for everyone,” said Towers. “This year we will feature Andre J. Thomas "Mass": A Celebration of Love and Joy. We will also feature an African piece entitled "Noel" arranged by Brad Holmes, which heralds in the birth of Christ.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming Spring 2020 semester, Coahoma plans on highlighting area high schools and bringing more cultural activities to the Clarksdale area.

“This Spring, we will present a choral festival that will feature high school choirs within the surrounding communities,” Towers added.
