The lights went down and a spotlight beamed down over a dance floor area of CCC employees spreading holiday cheer in a performance of Earth, Wind and Fire’s hit song “Boogie Wonderland.” Distance Learning & Student Retention director Joseph McKee led the group in bell bottom jeans, comically and exaggeratingly imitating the lead singer from the song’s music video.

Themed ‘Afros & Mistletoes,’ staff, faculty, administrators and friends of the Coahoma Community College campus community traded in their office attire for some 70s-era costumes of fringe, bright colors, trumpet sleeves and bell sleeves topped off with high, picked-out hair pieces. Staff member Yolanda Miller wished everyone “love, peace and soul” in a jubilant welcome and presented President Towner who attended the gathering as ‘Super Fly’ in a red and Zebra-print suit, a matching hat and a mink coat, compliments of the late Eddie “Smitty” Smith, who was a tenured employee and dear friend of CCC. Garnering many smiles and laughs and posing for many pictures with personnel after making his grand entrance, President Towner encouraged the employees to forget about their troubles and invited them to flaunt their groovy moves in the soul train line that would come later in the party. At the on-campus Coahoma County Safe House festively decorated with hippie-inspired accessories and patterns, Personnel engaged in hula hoop contests, a best-dressed competition, a ‘Name that Movie Scene’ game and dance contest to win gift cards.
