In preparation for an upcoming national competition against some of the top groups in the nation, Mississippi Valley State University’s debate team will once again bring a mock trial demonstration to Coahoma Community College on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Social Science department chair Barbara Boschert and husband, Attorney Curtis Boschert will offer their critique of the practice trial of a fictitious case in which a chimpanzee goes wild and kills a television show writer. The couple was given the opportunity to gain experience in debate team training for mock trial competitions with Clarksdale High School students. The high school group reached the state level competition where they came in 5th place.

MVSU debaters in the past have been awarded scholarships toward their law school education. The college team has also won many awards for doing an outstanding job in competitions.

Barbara Boschert, who teaches history classes at CCC, urges students to attend the 6 p.m. event that will be held in the lecture room in Whiteside Hall and observe how a court case is conducted. She has great confidence in its intriguing factor.

“The MVSU mock trial team has been doing a remarkable job since 1998,” she said. “This particular institution has a debate team with a reputation for winning. Aspiring lawyers here at Coahoma will see others in their age range defend a certain position using the information presented to them. This is something that really forces students to put on their thinking caps.”
