CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College faculty members are being extended the opportunity to add an additional certification to their resumes next week.

The college will be offering a professional development course on Reading Apprenticeship (RA) to instructors in each of its Divisions. RA is a research-validated approach designed to help college and university students from across disciplines and levels to develop advanced academic literacies, including disciplinary specific ways of reading, writing, researching and problem solving.

Sessions are scheduled for Sept. 13; Oct 28; Jan. 20; and Feb.10. All sessions will be located in the Roosevelt Wade Computer Lab (located on the second floor of Whiteside Hall) and will run from 1 to 3 p.m.

CCC Social Science Chair Barbara Boschert encourages all CCC faculty members who have not been trained to attend the sessions, as the certification is part of the institution’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) requirements for reaccreditation.

“RA is the most effective learning strategy I have ever been exposed to. It completely changed the way I teach and how I think about teaching and learning,” said Boschert. “Plus, students gain the skills and confidence needed to read and comprehend academic texts.”

Participants must attend all sessions to receive designation as a Reading Apprenticeship instructor.

All interested instructors should email Boschert at bboschert@coahomacc.edu to reserve a seat.
