CLARKSDALE –Coahoma Community College students completing two Short-Term Health Sciences programs were recognized Thursday evening during a graduation ceremony.

Certificates were awarded to 22 students completing CCC’s Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) and Electrocardiography (EKG) programs.

The ceremony also featured a special tribute to Clarksdale firefighter and CCC EMT student John Clark, who passed away in a motorcycle crash before completing the program.

CCC Chief of Staff Jerone Shaw served as the graduation speaker.

Shaw began by recalling the need for CCC’s Division of Health Sciences several years ago.

“In 1993, we didn’t offer any health-related programs, and we thought we needed to do better for our students and our community. Today, we can proudly say that we have nine programs offered at a state-of-the-art training facility, and we’re in the process of renovating an additional building,” Shaw said.

“We’ve come a long way. We’re so proud of these young men and women who have supported us by selecting Coahoma for their training.”

Shaw told the graduates that their respective careers play a vital role in the health care field.

“I stand here before you thanking you and congratulating you,” said Shaw. “I know so little of what you do, but I do know it’s so crucial. We hope that you can stay at home… we baby-boomers and others are depending on you.”
