CLARKSDALE – For students in Coahoma Community College’s Cosmetology and Barbering program, it was a chance to practice their skills. But for residents at Clarksdale’s SLA Jones Activity Center, it meant so much more.
“They love it,” said SLA Jones Activity Director Patricia Payno. “When I told them we would be taking a field trip to Coahoma, they all were excited and jumped on bandwagon to come.”
The residents visited CCC’s Cosmetology/Barbering Department Wednesday morning where they enjoyed manicures, shampoos and haircuts.
In addition to free pampering for the seniors, CCC Cosmetology Instructor Nancy Howard said the visit benefited students as well.
“We appointed each student to the service that they would provide, so this was an opportunity to really get them out of their comfort zones and give them a feel for the real-world,” Howard said.
CCC Cosmetology Instructor Shirley Hicks added that the visit was about more than just hair and nails— it was also a lesson on how to treat people.
“This was a great opportunity to expose our students to senior citizens living in our community and help them to develop the patience and skills they’ll need to provide them services because even with age, they like to be pampered and taken care of too,” she said. “It was also the chance for our students to hear some of the seniors’ life-stories and hopefully pick up on the wisdom they have to offer.”
Payno said she looks forward to continuing the partnership with CCC.
“Coahoma’s Cosmetology Department always visits the center to sit with our seniors and manicure their nails, and we just wanted to show our appreciation and give back by returning the visit,” she said.
