CLARKSDALE — Coahoma Community College honored 41 short-term Health Science graduates Wednesday evening as a packed house of family and friends was bursting at the seams inside the Zee A. Barron Student Union’s Magnolia room.

The show of support for the graduates was echoed in the words of CCC President Dr. Valmadge Towner as he addressed those being honored.

“You did not get here on your own,” said Towner. “For everyone one of you graduating here tonight, there is someone else whose support helped to get you here. And, to those family members in the audience, know that we thank you for supporting these students and helping them to reach their goals.”

Graduates completed the short-term requirements in the Polysomnography, Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technology and EKG programs. Each of the ceremony’s speakers encouraged the graduates not to look at the graduation as an end, but a beginning to continue furthering their educations and careers.

“Always think about getting better, and continue improving yourself every day,” said special guest speaker Dr. Scott Nelson of Cleveland Family Medicine. “Never be satisfied with the status quo, always work hard to be the best that you can be.

“The jobs you will be doing — yes, you will be getting a paycheck — but this work is a calling. Giving of yourselves to others is a calling. Don’t ever forget how important your job is. Your patients need you, the Mississippi Delta needs you badly.”
